When it comes to influencer marketing, bigger doesn’t always mean better.
Different influencer tiers bring different strengths to a campaign. Some give you reach, some give you trust, while others help create buzz and conversation.
So, which one should your brand choose?
The short answer: you probably need more than one.
Nano Influencers: 1K–10K Followers
Nano influencers have smaller, highly personal communities. They’re often quite general in terms of content, some are very niche, and relatable, as well as closer to users, which makes their recommendations feel more like word-of-mouth than advertising.
The good: Cost-effective, authentic and great for creating conversation within smaller communities. Best if you want to create social proof, and buzz effect. Generally would involve a quantity of creators per campaign.
The catch: Their reach and eyeballs are naturally limited. Hence, you’ll usually need a larger pool of nano influencers to create significant campaign visibility.
Micro Influencers: 10K–50K Followers
Micro influencers sit in a sweet spot between community and reach. They can still feel relatable while having enough audience size to create meaningful visibility for a brand.
The good: Stronger trust, niche credibility and generally good engagement, without the investment required for bigger creators.
The catch: Using too many creators with similar content can make a campaign feel overly paid or repetitive.
Mid-Tier & Macro Influencers: 50K–1M Followers
This is where you start getting serious reach while still benefiting from creators who have built a strong relationship with their audience.
They’re particularly useful when a brand wants to create hype, awareness and conversation at scale.
The good: Strong reach, credibility and the ability to create momentum around a campaign.
The catch: The bigger the creator pool, the more important content direction becomes. If every creator delivers the same obvious sponsored message, the campaign can quickly feel too commercial.
Mega Influencers & Celebrities: 1M+ Followers
These are the names that can put your brand in front of a massive audience almost instantly.
They’re powerful for launches, major announcements and campaigns where visibility and brand association matter.
The good: Massive eyeballs, instant awareness and strong cultural impact. Brands can easily tap on their large followers that already trust the creators.
The catch: If a campaign relies entirely on celebrities or mega influencers, especially with low number of them, it can sometimes feel too curated or distant from everyday consumers, even when engagement is strong.
So, Which Tier Should Your Brand Choose?
All of them.
At The A-List Malaysia, we generally recommend mixing influencer tiers within the same campaign because each one plays a different role.
Think of it as building an ecosystem.
Mega and celebrity influencers create the big splash.
Mid-tier and macro influencers build the hype and keep the conversation going.
Micro and nano influencers make the campaign feel more organic, relatable and widespread.
One gives you the eyeballs. Another gives you credibility. Another gives you community.
They need each other.
The best influencer marketing campaign isn’t necessarily the one with the biggest influencer.
It’s the one where every creator tier has a clear role — and together, they make the campaign bigger, more believable and more effective.
